About The Painted Fly

The Painted Fly is an illustrated atlas of art for anyone curious, with no training needed.

The name comes from musca depicta: the lifelike fly that some painters added to a picture, as if it had just landed on it. It is a small reminder to look closely.

How images are used

Artworks are reproduced only when they are in the public domain and come from a source with a clear licence. The author, date, museum, source and licence appear under each image. Works still under copyright are described in words, linked to their museum and illustrated with our own drawings, which do not imitate them.
